Microdermabrasion (or power peel or particle resurfacing) is a method of exfoliation that uses precision equipment to remove dead skin cells. The result is a reduced depth of wrinkles and lines, smaller apparent pore size and a finer appearance of skin texture.
Removing the dead skin layer permits deeper penetration of skin care products such as toners and collagen treatments. This improves the effectiveness and lengthens the duration of the improvements.
There are two main ways to perform microdermabrasion: abrasive powder and abrasion tools. The most common abrasive powder used is white aluminum oxide. A stream of compressed air is used to spray the particles across the skin, thus removing the dead skin cells. Considerable skill is required to perform this treatment correctly and safely. Be sure your attendant has proper training and experience.
It is also important to remove all the aluminum oxide from your skin during and after the peel. It is particularly important to thoroughly remove the grit from areas near the eyes.
Take extra care in the sun after a peel. That nice, healthy glow can be seriously damaged by too much sun. Extra lotion and sun screen are in order to protect your now youthful skin. If your skin is particularly sensitive to start with, microdermabrasion is probably not a good choice. It is also not recommended for older individuals with thin skin. Repeated abrasion treatments causes significant thinning itself.
One new way to perform microdermabrasion is with specialized diamond tools. These devices use diamond studded, vibrating surfaces to gently remove the dead skin. The result is exactly the same, but with no gritty, powder mess.
In addition, the tool includes a hot and cold ultrasonic hammer. The hot hammer is used to open pores before cleaning or extraction. The cold side is used after a peel to help close pores and calm the skin.
The sterile diamond abrasion tools will very likely replace the older, abrasive spray models. With no powder to collect and no air jets, the tool is safer and just as effective. Many of these tools also include ultrasound features, the newest techniques for stimulating dermal tissue. Setup your own microdermabrasion spa appointment today.
